Charlotte the Mantis

Charlotte the Praying Mantis

As you can see, we have disturbed her meal. Of all the mantises on the back porch she is by far the largest (and why I think she is a she). She has nearly doubled in size. I don't know how long she will stay back there but I have noticed a decline in small gnat-ty insects in the general vicinity. There is something disconcerting about an insecting making eye contact though. I'm just going to keep a respectful distance if it's okay with all of you.

What an elegant Mantis! We don't have these in the UK. They seem quite a useful bug to have around.

Once in a while these very graceful bugs do invade our space, here on Gabriola Island, off the coast of British Columbia. Usually, if it's indoors, my daughter, Hedgehog, runs for a wide mouth glass and a stiff envelope and it's up to me to carefully trap the mantis under the glass and slip the envelope in between the wall or the window and the mouth of the glass. Then the insect gets transported outside. If I spot one in the garden, I am grateful that some of the harmful insects are being taken care of. I wonder who the mantis is praying to? Or is it preying?
